Vision, Mission, Values

Across the African continent and across the political spectrum, we are dedicated to ending the curse of fatherlessness that is maiming our children and coarsening our society.  Whatever its other advantages, a society in which large and growing numbers of adult males cease to nurture their offspring is a failing society. We call for an African fatherhood movement.

Every child deserves a loving, committed and responsible father. As men and women, black and white, rich and poor, we are all committed to restoring the institution of loving fatherhood as the birthright of every child, the sure expectation of every mother, and the joyful obligation of every man who helps to bring a baby into this world.

Abolishing maternity fees enthusiastically welcomed

African Fathers Initiative welcomes government's decision to abolish maternity fees.

The African Fathers Initiative has warmly appreciated government's decision to abolish maternity service fees across Zimbabwe. Speaking at a workshop in Kadoma, AFI's Director, Trevor Davies says, 'this is fantastic news for all hopeful parents and I believe it is going to have a dramatic impact on the wellbeing of families welcoming newborns into this world. "

'This is a gender sensitive budgetary approach to parenting and maternal health that will put Zimbabwe in the forefront of efforts across Africa to reduce maternal mortality rates that have remained persistently high in Zimbabwe.

This initiative by our government becomes part of new family centred approaches that will relieve particularly our poorest families of financial burdens around parenting including the cash transfers to thousands of poor families under the National Action Plan on Orphans and Vulnerable Children – (NAP II).

Slowly we are starting to see all the strands coming together in poverty alleviation and family health. The momentum must continue.

Parenting Action Plan - Zimbabwe

Our overarching framework is our proposed Parenting Action Plan for Zimbabwe. We are looking for partners in womens and childrens organisations who can help us in our advocacy about this.

The objective will be to demonstrate that parenting support can make a major contribution to the health of Zimbabwean society by caring for children and producing a new generation of Zimbabweans for whom, in particular, fathers will be significant by their presence rather than their absence. Institutions will start to value parenting and fatherhood as a key and positive development driver and work with us to develop reflective policy and practice inclusive of fatherhood roles.

Ten Ways to Be a Better Dad

Respect Your Children's Mother One of the best things a father can do for his children is to respect their mother. If you are married, keep your marriage strong and vital. If you are not married, it is still important to respect and support the mother of your children. A father and mother who respect each other and let their children know it provide a secure environment for them. When children see their parents respecting each other, they are more likely to feel that they are also accepted and respected.

Of eight MPs the BBC spoke to, only one said he would heed her suggestion. We back the DPM's call, if you get into public service you have to walk the walk and talk the talk - and on this occasion it's not that painful!!!!!!
